Alternative feel good activities

Posted 4 weeks ago

Don't knock it till you've tried it...

This University Mental Health Day, why not shake things up and try something a little different to boost your mood? Forget the usual self-care tips, these alternative and unusual feel-good activities might be exactly what you need to de-stress/recharge.

1. Goat Yoga πŸπŸ§˜β€β™‚οΈ

Yes, you read that right - goat yoga is a real thing, and it’s as relaxing and hilarious as it sounds. This quirky twist on traditional yoga involves stretching and posing while adorable goats roam around, sometimes even jumping onto your back. Not only does it provide a great workout, but the laughter and joy that come from interacting with the goats is a proven mood booster. We are hosting a session on campus on the 13 March, get involved!

2. Cold Water Dips πŸŒŠβ„οΈ

Taking a dip in chilly waters might sound a bit extreme this time of year, but cold-water swimming has been shown to boost endorphins, improve circulation, and reduce stress. Head to Weston Shore or a nearby lido with some mates and experience the invigorating effects of a cold water plunge. Just be sure to go in safely and warm up afterwards with a hot drink!

3. Laughter Therapy πŸ˜‚

They say laughter is the best medicine, and there’s actual science behind it. Laughter therapy groups use guided exercises to help people laugh intentionally, triggering happy hormones and reducing stress. You can join a laughter therapy session, watch stand up with your friends, or just scroll through funny videos (we'd recommend unusual memes compilation on YouTube).

4. Forest Bathing 🌳

This Japanese practice, known as Shinrin-Yoku, is all about immersing yourself in nature. Take a slow, mindful walk through Southampton Common or the New Forest, paying attention to the sights, sounds, and smells around you (a real feast for the senses). Studies show that spending time in nature lowers cortisol levels and improves mental clarity, making it a perfect feel-good activity.

5. Volunteering with Animals 🐢🐾

Spending time with animals has been shown to reduce anxiety and increase happiness. Look for opportunities to volunteer at an animal shelter or pet sit for a friend. Southampton has plenty of rescue centres where you can lend a hand and get some much-needed furry therapy in return.

6. Bubble Wrap Popping Party 🎈

Bubble wrap popping

Simple, yet strangely satisfying... popping bubble wrap is a great way to relieve tension. Get some friends together, grab a big roll of bubble wrap, and just go for it. It’s an oddly effective way to de-stress and we won't judge, we swear!

This University Mental Health Day, why not step out of your comfort zone and try something new? Your mental well-being matters, try something different and feel the difference πŸ§
