Southampton is full of many activities and places to see, but sometimes it's nice to get out of the city. Here are our top must-visit places to escape the busy city life:
1. Stonehenge: 30 minutes by train
You've probably heard that Stonehenge is one of Britain's most famous prehistoric monuments, and it's definitely worth the hype. For guaranteed entry, you must book online (advance tickets are 15% off), but you can choose any time slot. The quickest way to get there is to take a train to Salisbury, from here there's a Stonehenge tour bus.
2. Isle of Wight: 30 minutes by ferry
The Isle of Wight lies just off the coast of Southampton, packed with historical buildings and food culture, making it a great city escape. Top sights include Queen Victoria's beautiful seaside home, Osbourne House and Carisbrooke Castle.
3. New Forest National Park: 15 minutes by train
New Forest National Park was once the royal hunting ground of William the Conqueror and is famous for its 3,000 free-roaming ponies, deer, and other wildlife! It's a perfect way of reconnecting with nature with an easy commute - there's a direct train from Southampton Central which will take you into the heart of the New Forest and the village of Brockenhurst, which is filled with high street shops, tearooms and pubs.
4. Portsmouth: 45 minutes by train
If you love the great Victorian novelist Charles Dickens, this will be right up your street. With only a 45-minute commute, Portsmouth is the birthplace of Charles Dickens, and you can step back into his era at his Museum. You'll also find other historical and maritime-themed attractions.
5. GoApe!: 35 minutes by bus
If you don't want to travel too far away from the city but want a different atmosphere and a fun day out, GoApe is always a great option for you and your friends. It's only a 20-minute bus ride (Line 14) from Southampton's city centre and then a 15-minute walk to the attraction. You can also get 10% off your tickets with Student Beans.
Top Tip: Travelling by train or bus is the easiest and cheapest way to get around as a student, so it can be handy to get yourself a 16-25 Railcard or Unilink bus app.
