Whether you're looking to stay in halls again, move into private rented housing, or explore purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA), here's a guide to help you make an informed choice.
1. Returning to university halls
If you enjoyed your time in halls and want to return, you're in luck — applications for returning students open in February.
Returning students can apply for a range of room types, including en-suite, shared bathrooms, and studio options at our sites in Southampton and Winchester. Living in halls again means you'll benefit from:
- All-inclusive bills
- On-site support and security
- Free Wi-Fi
- Access to social events and communal spaces
Keep an eye on the Halls Life website for updates on application dates and availability.
2. Private rented accommodation
Many students choose to move into private rented housing after their first year. This option offers greater independence and flexibility, especially if you're living with friends or want to choose your own location.
Key points to consider:
- Costs: Expect to pay around £450–£550 per month, depending on location and property type.
- Bills: These are usually not included, so budget for utilities, internet, and other services.
- Where to look: Our accredited scheme, SASSH, is a great resource which will help you find accredited properties that meet safety and quality standards. You can also explore listings on Rightmove, SpareRoom, and OpenRent.
Popular student areas include Portswood, Highfield, Swaythling, and Shirley, all offering good transport links and amenities.
3. Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA)
PBSA is a great option if you're looking for modern facilities, privacy, and a vibrant student community. These buildings are professionally managed and often include:
- En-suite rooms or studios
- On-site gyms, study areas, and social spaces
- All-inclusive rent
- Central locations near campuses and city amenities
Some top-rated PBSAs in Southampton include:
- Marland House which features stylish studios in the city centre, close to Westquay and transport links.
- Southampton Crossings offers a roof terrace, fitness suite, and communal areas.
- Park House includes a cinema lounge, gym, and 24/7 security.
- Lucia Foster Welch has affordable rooms with cleaning services, located near Ocean Village.
Final tips
- Don't rush: A lot of landlords start listing their properties in November, especially with SASSH. Take the time to think about who you want to live with and where you might like to be based before committing to a contract. There are plenty of accommodation options throughout the city to suit every budget.
- Visit properties: Arrange viewings to get a feel for the space and neighbourhood. Don't sign a contract if you aren't 100% sure the property id the right fit for you.
- Ask questions: Whether you're dealing with the University or a private landlord, make sure you understand the contract terms and what's included in your rent.
