"Fresher's flu" is a term used for the common colds and viruses that emerge at the start of term. It's generally caused by large groups of people mixing, which is likely when you're starting University. There are many people to interact with, as well as going to new places with your new flatmates.
The typical symptoms are:
- A sore throat
- A runny nose
- A cough
- Fatigue
- Mild fever
These symptoms usually peak within a few days, but they do clear up on their own within a week or two.
For a speedy recovery, make sure you:
✅ Rest: Skip late nights and allow your immune system time to rest and recharge.
✅ Hydrate: Drink plenty of fluids like water, herbal teas or honey and lemon to soothe your throat.
✅ Take pain relief: Use over-the-counter medications like paracetamol and ibuprofen to manage fevers and headaches.
✅ Visit a doctor: If you're still feeling unwell after two weeks, or fi your symptoms worsen, make sure you seek medical advice.
It can be a good idea to register with a GP before starting your course in case of any medical emergencies, minor or major.
When to get emergency help:
While "fresher's flu" is usually harmless, symptoms can sometimes be confused with more serious illnesses like meningitis.
Call 999 or seek emergency medical attention immediately if you notice severe symptoms, such as:
- A severe headache and a stiff neck
- An aversion to bright lights
- A high temperature combined with cold hands and feet
- Drowsiness, confusion, or difficulty waking up
- A red or purple rash that does not fade when a glass is pressed against it.
While the first few weeks of starting university are exciting, you need to make sure you take care of your health and wellbeing. Make sure you wash your hands regularly, clean surfaces in your halls and eat balanced meals to protect your immune system.
