LGBT+ History Month 2026

Celebrating diversity and recognising impact

February is LGBT+ History Month in the UK. While different countries celebrate at different times of the year, February is when universities and communities across the UK take time to recognise LGBT+ history, culture, and everyday life.

Who is LGBT+ History Month for?

LGBT+ History Month is for everyone  whether you identify as LGBT+, are an ally, or are simply curious. It's about learning, celebrating diversity, and recognising the many different stories that shape our communities.

In halls, we're already a diverse and welcoming space where students from all over the world live together. LGBT+ History Month isn't about inclusion for one month only, it's about highlighting and celebrating something that's part of our community all year round.

This year's theme: Science & Innovation

Each year has a national theme, and for 2026 the them is Science & Innovation. It shines a light on the impact LGBT+ people have had, and continue to have, in areas like science, technology, medicine, and research.

A story worth knowing

One well-known example is Alan Turing, whose work helped lay the foundations for modern computing and artificial intelligence (AI). His story is a reminder that innovation thrives when people are free to think differently and be themselves, and that diverse voices have always shaped progress, even when they weren't always visible at the time.

If you'd like to discover more stories and key figures, keep an eye out for the LGBT+ History Month display boards within your halls.
