Must Read Before You Arrive

Welcome to the University of Southampton! Whether you are coming from across the country or around the world, we have put together some key tips to help you settle in smoothly.

1. Pre-Arrival Checklist

Before you arrive, make sure you have completed all the necessary paperwork, including the University welcome steps. This includes your student visa (for international students), accommodation details, and any university forms. Do not forget to pack important documents such as your passport, admission letter, and medical records.

2. Getting to Southampton

Southampton is well-connected by road, rail, and air. If you are flying in, Southampton Airport offers flights from various European cities. International students can also fly into London Heathrow or Gatwick and take a direct train or coach to Southampton. The university offers a meet-and-greet service at major airports, so look out for that if you need assistance. You can meet numerous student ambassadors (like me) and staff members to help you out with your luggage. However, keep in mind the baggage allowance.

3. Moving into Accommodation

Once you arrive, head to your accommodation. Residences will take care of you as they have 24-hour receptions to help you when you arrive.

4. Settling In and Orientation

The first few days can be overwhelming, but the university's Welcome Week is designed to help you settle in. Attend the Freshers’ Fare and Bunfight to explore societies, clubs, and services on campus. Attend your lectures, peer sessions and seminars just to get a clear idea of what to academically expect from the entire year. Be careful with all the events that you attend, it might get a little expensive and we do not want you to get financially broke in the first few days of your university.

5. Setting Up Essentials

Do not forget to set up a UK bank account and get a UK SIM card. The university’s Student Hub can help guide you through the process. Students should also register with a local GP (doctor) to ensure you have access to healthcare during your stay.

6. Exploring Southampton

Southampton is a vibrant city with plenty to offer. Take some time to explore the local shops, restaurants, and cultural sites. Public transport is convenient, and student discounts are widely available. You may want to explore nearby attractions like the New Forest and Winchester or take a short trip to London. If you live in University Halls of Residence, then you do get a free bus pass, and why don't you look at a student rail cards to explore further afield.

7. Understanding Your Academic Environment

Familiarise yourself with the university’s online resources, such as Blackboard, the library system, and your course timetable. Do not hesitate to reach out to your tutors or academic advisors if you have any questions. International students should also attend any additional academic workshops designed to help adjust to the UK’s education system. Efficiently utilise Outlook – for time management and Microsoft Teams.

8. Building a Support Network

Joining Societies and clubs and taking part in free sessions such as Be Active Badminton helps a lot to declutter your mind and make new friends while you play. The International Student Support team is available to help with any challenges you might face, from cultural adjustments to academic concerns.

9. Stay Informed and Get Involved

Keep an eye on university communications for updates on events, deadlines, and essential information. The Student Union and various student societies offer numerous opportunities to get involved, meet new people, and make the most of your university experience.

10. Stay Safe and Healthy

Lastly, familiarise yourself with the safety guidelines on campus and around the city. International students should also be aware of cultural differences and legal requirements in the UK. Always keep emergency contacts handy and do not hesitate to ask for help if you need it. Do not forget to call your loved ones whenever you get time, they will want to hear all about your new adventures.

We hope these tips help you feel more prepared and excited about your new adventure at the University of Southampton.
