Sometimes studying alone can become isolating, especially if you're struggling to understand the content. So instead of feeling stuck on your own in your room, why not try group studying?
All of our halls sites have dedicated study areas and common rooms with tables, sofas and plugs that are great for group study, and don't forget to check out all of the study spaces on campus too.
There are many benefits to having study sessions with your coursemates or flatmates:
1. Reduce feelings of isolation 🪴
Working with others creates a sense of community, preventing loneliness that often contributes to exam stress. Studying or revising together can help you realise that you're not alone in your struggles, so you can help each other through it.
2. Share the knowledge 🧠
Discussing, questioning and teaching each other the material helps in a deeper understanding of the content and allows you to clarify complex topics. This can help reduce anxiety about anything you don't understand, and can really help you get your head around areas that are a consistent blocker.
3. Enhances productivity and time management 🕓
It's very easy when you're on your own to stare at your laptop and say "not today". But when there are others around you, you instantly become more productive and motivated to do work. It can also help break down large, intimidating assignments into smaller, manageable chunks.
4. Provides emotional support and validation 💕
It's also very easy to spiral when you're studying alone. You may say "I can't do this" ten times and start to believe it. In a group study session, you have people around you, going through the same thing, and who are probably saying the same things to themselves. Sharing the pressure of deadlines and exams with people who understand can lighten the mental load, and it offers a place for mutual encouragement.
5. Creates a positive and focused environment ☀️
Regular study sessions help maintain focus, boost motivation and create a routine that reduces the stress of procrastination. Group sessions can also serve as a positive, low-stress social activity, allowing you to connect with friends and peers and relax during busy exam periods.
Finding comfort in group studying could benefit you a lot during exam season, especially if you're feeling overwhelmed and stressed. If you would like some extra support, you can contact the Student Wellbeing Team, we're all rooting for you ❤️
