For most students, university is the first taste of independence, and with this freedom comes responsibility. One of the biggest responsibilities being looking after yourself.
Here are some simple personal safety tips to help you feel more confident and comfortable navigating the city and university as a student.
Staying safe in halls
- Lock up: Never prop your flat door open, even if you're just nipping down the corridor, and always check that the door is locked behind you.
- Don't let strangers in: Be cautious about holding doors open for people you don't recognise.
- Look after your stuff: Keep your valuables out of sight when you're out of the flat.
- Be neighbourly: Get to know your flatmates and other residents, looking out for each other can make you – and everyone else – feel a lot safer.
The Res Life Cycle team have out of hours managers who are based in halls from 6pm to 8am to help assist you if necessary.
Staying safe on campus
- Know your routes: Learn where your main lecture buildings are, the exits and 24-hour facilities.
- Get to know Campus Security: Save the emergency Campus Security number (023 8059 3311) in your phone just so you have it if you need it. The security teams patrol each of the campuses and are trained in first aid.
- Be aware of your surroundings: If you've had a late night study session at the library and are walking home in the dark, stick to well-lit areas and stay alert on your journey.
Staying safe in the city
- Plan ahead: Before heading out, check transport times and routes so you don't get stuck.
- Stick with friends: Try to explore the city in groups, especially when it's dark or you're in unfamiliar areas.
- Stay switched on: Avoid being distracted by headphones or phones when walking alone.
- Keep belongings close: Never leave your personal items unattended in public spaces.
- Get money out safely: At cash machines, always hide your PIN and keep your card close.
- Know your transport options: Don't want to get the Unilink bus home late at night? The Students' Union runs a free Safety Bus to help you get home and will drop you right off at your door.
- Share your movements: If you are heading out alone, let someone know where you're going and when you expect to be back, simply send a quick text or use apps like Find My Friends.
