Navigating Southampton as a First-Year Engineering

Let us examine Kithmal's move to Southampton and how it was made easier overall by his residence in the University Halls of Residence.

2nd Year Electronics Engineering Student

Ex-Wessex Lane Resident

Looking back, moving to Southampton last year as a first-year Electronics Engineering student was a huge step for me. As an international student, I was both excited and a bit anxious about settling into a new city. But Southampton quickly became a place that feels like home, thanks to the amazing places I have discovered and the wonderful friends I have made along the way. If you are new here like me, I hope this guide helps you find your way around!

Accommodation Experience

During my first year, I lived in Wessex Lane Halls of Residence, which played a huge role in my positive experience at the university. One of the best things about living in student accommodation was the free bus pass and laundry services, which saved me a lot of money. Additionally, the ResLife Ambassadors were fantastic—they organised events like games nights every Thursday on-site, which made it easier to meet new people and make friends. I met many of my coursemates through these events, and they now make up a majority of my friend group, showing just how effective these activities are in fostering a strong community. Moreover, the flatmates I lived with in Wessex Lane are now my housemates, as we have all moved into a house together for our second year.

Tech Shopping and Gadgets

One of the rewards of studying electronics engineering is that I get to be mesmerised by the latest gadgets. WestQuay is the perfect place for this. It is a massive shopping centre in the city centre with all the big tech stores like Apple and Curry’s PC World. I have already spent quite a bit of time (and money!) there, whether I am checking out new tech or grabbing some essential supplies for my course.

For more specialised electronics components, a gem of a store called RS Components on the outskirts of the city. It has been super helpful when I needed parts for my projects that I could not find anywhere else.

Fuelling Up: Best Places to Eat

Studying engineering is no joke, so finding good places to eat has been essential. When I am on campus, I often head to The Bridge Café. It is right by the engineering buildings and has some great lunch options. The coffee is strong enough to keep me going through those long lab sessions!

For something off-campus, Portswood is the place to be. It is close to the university and has a ton of student-friendly places. I am an enthusiastic fan of Rio’s Peri Peri, a fried chicken restaurant that does amazing burgers and wraps at affordable prices. It is the perfect place to unwind with friends after a long week of lectures.

Study Breaks and Chill Spots

When I need a break from studying, Southampton Common is my favourite spot. It is a huge park close to the university, perfect for clearing your head after spending hours in front of a screen. I have also started jogging there in the mornings – it is a fantastic way to start the day.

Exploring the City

I am still new here, but I have started exploring some of the historic parts of Southampton too. The Bargate is a medieval gatehouse right in the middle of the city, and it is surrounded by cool shops and cafes. It is a wonderful place to start if you are into history or just want to take a break from the modern hustle.

The waterfront area near Ocean Village is another awesome spot. There is something about the views of the docks and the open water that I find calming. Plus, there are some great restaurants there if you are looking to treat yourself.

Final Thoughts

Starting university in a new city can be overwhelming, but Southampton has quickly become a place I am excited to call home. Whether you are looking for the best places to eat, the best areas to explore or just somewhere to chill, there is something here for everyone.

If you are a fellow first-year or just looking to explore more of what Southampton has to offer, I hope the recommended activities and areas help you settle in. And who knows, I will see you around campus, at one of these places, or even at one of the magnificent events organised by the ResLife team at Wessex Lane Halls!
