A Guide for International Students

Welcome to the University of Southampton! Moving to a new country is an exciting journey, and we’re here to help you adjust to life in the UK.

1. Understanding Southampton

Southampton is a lively, student-friendly city with plenty to offer. The city centre has everything from shops and restaurants to parks and cultural sites. Public transport is convenient, and buses are a popular way to get around. Don't forget to explore the beautiful coastline and historic landmarks nearby.

2. Setting In

Whether you’re in university accommodation or private housing, make your space feel like home. Get familiar with local grocery stores, bus routes and services available. Opening a UK bank account and managing your budget are important first steps. Southampton is affordable, but it’s good to keep track of your spending.

3. Healthcare and Wellbeing

Register with a local GP (doctor) soon after you arrive to access healthcare through the NHS. The university also provides mental health and wellbeing support, so don’t hesitate to seek help if needed.

4. Academic Life

The UK’s education system may differ from what you’re used to. Be prepared for independent study and research. Use the university’s academic resources and don’t hesitate to ask for help if you need it. There are also support services specifically for international students. The university offers support services for Language, Math etc which can be accessed by anyone. They also host events specially for internationals to make them aware and prepare them for the job work environment.

5. Social and Cultural Life

Join student societies and attend university events to make friends and immerse yourself in the local culture. Southampton’s diverse community is welcoming, and you’ll find plenty of opportunities to connect with others. I got to learn a lot about different people and their culture and diversity played a vital role in that.

6. Stay Safe and Legal

Southampton is a safe city, but it’s important to be aware of your surroundings and follow local laws. Keep your visa and documents up to date, and always have your ID on hand. This might come as a shock, but if you ever go to a club or pub, always carry your BRP with you unless you have a UK Driving Licence. This is to verify that you cross the age benchmark required.

We hope this guide helps you settle in and enjoy your time in Southampton. Welcome to your new adventure at the University of Southampton!
