A Day in the life of an English creative writing student.
My day began with an easy commute to Avenue Campus for my 9am lecture and a little stop-off to Avenue Café to buy an iced latte. The best part about going in for an early lecture is that campus is quite quiet, which means no queue for coffee! The lecture hall is my personal favourite because it has Bluetooth connectivity for registering attendance on SEAtS, which means I’m not having to strain my eyes to see the code from near to the back of the room because I have a habit of forgetting my glasses and leaving them on my bedside cabinet. My lecture was on the module Women’s Writing and the Canon, which is my double module for this semester. It is on a different book each week and this week was Jane Austen week. The lecture is two hours long, which means we get a great overview of the text and the literary framework we’re looking at the text through.
My next class is at 12.00, so I have just enough time to sit and chat to my friends whilst enjoying a bowl of chips that Avenue Café does for a bargain price. The class is a seminar, which means it is a lot more interactive and we discuss a list of questions that are sent to us before the seminar so we can prep for it. Sometimes this is group work and sometimes it is independent. As this is a creative writing seminar, it is mostly independent writing tasks to then share with others and the class, if we feel comfortable. Although, it’s scary every time to share your work as a writer, the feedback is so worth it.
That concludes all my lectures for today, so I head to Hartley Library for a couple of hours of lock-in time before I go see some of my friends at Muse in Portswood to have a catch-up, as they’re on different courses so I see them a lot less regularly. Before we know it, it is evening and we are all heading home to cook dinner and relax whilst watching the new Off Campus series and having a quick check to see if there are any pending articles that need editing for the University's magazine society, called ‘The Edge’ where I'm a Film Editor.
Of course, each day is different at Uni but this is a typical day where I try to keep the balance between studying hard and having fun socialising because that, to me, is what uni is all about, trying new things and having a lot of fun along the way because time goes so fast.
