Support available for travel, food, and equipment costs

If you're completing a course-required placement this academic year, you may be eligible for extra financial help. The University has launched the Placement Support Fund to offer targeted assistance to students whose placement commitments may create additional financial pressure.

What is the Placement Support Fund?

The Placement Support Fund is a discretionary grant designed to support students who face increased costs as a direct result of taking part in compulsory placements (this excludes the Year in Employment scheme). The University recognises that placements can involve essential expenses that quickly add up — such as daily travel, food while on site, or specialist equipment — and this fund aims to help ease that burden.

How much could I receive?

Eligible students may receive up to £300 as a contribution towards essential placement-related costs. This amount is not a loan, so it does not need to be repaid.

Who can apply?

The fund is available to students who meet specific widening participation criteria. These criteria help ensure support is directed to those who may be disproportionately affected by the extra financial demands that placements can bring.

If you're unsure whether you meet the criteria, don't worry — full details can be found on the Financial Support Team's webpage now, along with details of all the financial support available within the University.

What can the fund help with?

The grant can be used to contribute towards essential costs you incur because of your placement, including but not limited to:

  • Travel and transport
  • Lunch or other food expenses while on placement
  • Required clothing or equipment
  • Other essential costs directly linked to your placement duties

How do I apply?

You can now view the full eligibility criteria and online application form on the University's Financial Support Team webpage.

If you're planning or currently undertaking a placement, it's worth checking the page as early as possible to see whether you can benefit.
