How applications work for new students

FAQ’s

Applications for 2025/26 are now open! Find out more about how and when to apply.

Who is eligible to apply to halls?

All new University of Southampton students can apply to live in University halls for their first and subsequent years of study.

Is a place in halls guaranteed?

If you are a first-year student and apply before 11:59pm UK time on 1 July in the year that you will start study, then you will be covered by our Accommodation Guarantee. This means that you are guaranteed to receive an offer of accommodation in a single-occupancy room.

Our Accommodation Guarantee extends to students who select the University of Southampton as their firm or insurance choice.

Are there any application fees?

You will not need to pay any fees until you receive and accept your offer of accommodation.

How much does accommodation cost — and what's included?

Costs vary depending on which halls site, room type, and catering option you choose. You can find out more about our fees and contract dates for 2025/26 on the University of Southampton Accommodation site or on our Halls Life page.

Accommodation contracts at the University of Southampton include: all bills; Wi-Fi; 24/7 receptions, security, and support; laundry use, and contents insurance covering your room and kitchen.

If you live in one of our Southampton-based halls sites, you will also benefit from a Unilink bus pass giving you access to unlimited travel on Unilink and Bluestar services throughout the city.

How do I apply?

Applications can be made via the accommodation portal from Wednesday 2 April 2025. You will need to create a new account before submitting your application. Make sure you use a personal email address when creating your account so that you do not miss any updates regarding your application.

How do applications work?

When applying, new students can submit a minimum of 5 or maximum of 7 preferences. You can find out more about our different room types on the University of Southampton Accommodation site.

You also have the ability to select a variety of special requirements and lifestyle preferences, such as accessible or adapted accommodation, alcohol-free flats, catered packages, LGBTQ+ flats, quieter lifestyles, and single gender accommodation.

When will I receive my offer of accommodation?

Students planning to study undergraduate courses (conditional and unconditional offer holders) will receive an accommodation offer in August once exam results have been released.

Any applications submitted after 1 July will be allocated and offered as availability allows. This may take a few weeks. Applications submitted after 1 July are not guaranteed accommodation.

We will send an email notifying you that you have an accommodation offer to accept. Please check the accommodation portal regularly as well, so you don’t miss the offer. You will have a short period of time to review the offer and accept it.

What if I accept my offer and then don’t come to the University of Southampton e.g. If Southampton is my insurance choice University?

If you subsequently don’t meet the conditions of your academic offer or you go to your first choice University (if Southampton is your insurance choice), you will not receive an accommodation offer — you don’t need to do anything and there will be no financial penalties or liabilities.

Where can I find information on the different halls sites?

As well as on the accommodation portal you can also find details of our halls on the accommodation website and Halls Life. You can find a playlist of 360° virtual tours for our halls site on our accommodation tours playlist.
