As the warmer weather draws us outside, there’s no better way to enjoy it than with a BBQ. But before you fire one up, whether you’re on the common, in a local park or greenspace, or at one of our halls sites, it’s important to know how to do it safely and responsibly.
SUSU has created a short video with the key things you need to know when enjoying a BBQ this summer.
The hidden impact of ground BBQs
While it might seem harmless, placing BBQs directly on the grass causes serious, lasting damage. The heat from disposable BBQs burns the ground, killing insects and plants, and destroying habitats vital to the ecosystem.
Beyond that, more than one million disposable BBQs end up in landfill each year, adding unnecessary waste and environmental harm.
Fires on the common: A growing concern
Last year, fire crews were called to Southampton Common multiple times to deal with fires caused by irresponsible BBQ use. It’s only a matter of time before one gets out of control. The message is clear: don’t be the reason an emergency service is needed — or worse, the cause of serious environmental damage.
If you do BBQ, follow these simple rules:
- Raise it — Always use a BBQ stand, bricks, or rocks to lift it off the grass. Never place it directly on the ground or vegetation.
- Remove all trace — Make sure your BBQ is fully out. Ensure BBQ and coals are cold, wrap in foil and place in a bin, or take your litter home if the bins are full.
- Reduce your impact — Avoid disposable BBQs altogether. Opt for a reusable, portable BBQ to help cut down on waste.
Or better yet, skip the BBQ and go for a picnic — it’s simpler, quicker, and leaves no trace behind.
