Following the closure of Mayflower Halls for essential maintenance works, we have sourced additional rooms at trusted private halls of residence to ensure we can offer students a good variety of rooms.

It is possible that a small number of students may receive an offer to live in University halls in Winchester while accommodation becomes available in Southampton. If this happens, we will support you with travel passes to enable you to travel to Southampton. Rooms in Southampton should become available as students do not arrive to start their studies with us. Students in this situation would be prioritised for moving into these vacant rooms, and we would make a payment of £150 towards your moving costs.

Should you wish to remain in Winchester, you would be welcome to do so.

Similarly, if you accept a contract for our Winchester Hall and then find accommodation independently that you prefer, we will release you from your contractual obligations.

Unfortunately, you will not be able to change the preferences on your application form, and the private halls are only available to new applicants.

If you have a medical condition or disability that affects your accommodation requirements, please contact accommodation@soton.ac.uk and provide details of your needs, along with any relevant supporting evidence. We will review the information and work with the Student Disability and Inclusion team to explore whether suitable accommodation can be identified to meet your requirements.

For all other students, the room transfer process will open in November for students wishing to explore moving to a new room.  

Rent for the private halls includes a bus pass, all utility costs, and access to all on-site facilities. At Lucia Foster Welch, one wash and one dry in the laundry is included in the rental cost. At Southampton Crossings and Canvas, laundry is not included.

For the private halls providers, we will pass your contact details to the provider and email you to let you know that you will be receiving communications from them. We will also let you know who to expect contact from and the method of communication you will receive, such as a telephone call or email. You will then receive an offer directly from the private halls provider and will sign a contract directly with them. Please remember to check your junk/spam folder so you do not miss this email. Your offer will not show on the University’s accommodation portal.

We have reserved whole flats/blocks of rooms in the private halls, so new undergraduate University of Southampton students applying through us will live together in these locations. There may also be students from other universities or educational providers living within the halls.

For any day-to-day issues or maintenance requests relating to your room, you will need to report these to the private provider by following their processes.

You can apply for these halls via the accommodation portal. This option will be available for Clearing students only.

Yes, all enrolled students are able to access our support services. We work closely with the private halls providers, and they will also offer their own support services.

All signed contracts are legally binding. If you wish to cancel your contract before arrival, please email us at accommodation@soton.ac.uk so we can review your request. Please note that you may be required to source a suitable replacement student to take over your contract. The exception to this for 2026/27 will be students studying in Southampton who are offered a contract at our Winchester Hall.

Yes, you will still be eligible to sign up for this service while living in one of our partner halls.

Unfortunately, these options will not be available in accommodation provided by private accommodation providers.

Each of these private halls is located near several other private halls, meaning there are a large number of student residents in these parts of the city. Southampton has a wide CCTV network and is a Purple Flag accredited city, meaning its evening and night-time economy is managed safely and well, and the city is considered to be vibrant, diverse and safe. Initiatives include visible police presence, street pastors and venue watch schemes. The Unilink bus pass covers the whole city, with buses running into the evening. A night bus service operated by Bluestar runs between 1am and 4am (additional charges apply), and there is a free shuttle bus operated by the Students’ Union (SUSU). Taxis, Uber and Bolt all operate in the city.
