Find out the top tips for having a bike at Uni

University of Southampton cycling information

The university encourages active transport options and has made it easy to get about by bike. With secure bike sheds at most of our sites and solid bike hoops at all of them, there is always somewhere you can lock your bike. Regular visits to campus from the Bike Doctor will keep your ride in top condition, and discounted bike locks mean you can be more confident that your bike will be safe. Abandoned bikes are rescued and reconditioned and can be purchased for bargain prices.

How to access a secure bike shed

Secure bike sheds can be found at many of our halls, and across our campuses. They are secure sheds, protected from rain, containing bike racks. To access them you need to hold your Student ID card against the access panel on the exterior of the shed. The panel may simply be a white rectangle let into the side of the shed, or a separate plastic box on a stand.

When you first arrive at your hall, you will need to ask a member of staff to let you into the bike shed. To get access added onto your own Student ID card, you need to visit the Unilink office on Highfield Campus (above the Students' Union shop). It's open between 8am and 2pm, Monday to Friday.

Some locations such as City Gateway, Mayflower and some locations at Glen Eyre will use your room key fob to access these areas. You can visit reception to get access loaded on to your fob.

While the sheds are secure, you should still lock your bike to a rack using a strong D-lock, and don't leave anything on your bike that can be removed, such as lights or helmets.

When you have entered the shed, close the door behind you. Do not let anyone follow you in! If you don't close the door in time, an alarm will sound until the door closes.

To leave the shed, find the door release button on the wall near the door, press it and make sure you close the door behind you promptly and firmly when you leave, or the alarm will sound.
