Meeting new people and living with strangers might feel overwhelming at first, but you'll quickly adapt and potentially make lifelong friends. However, it can be tricky if everyone has different personalities, habits, and expectations.

To avoid conflicts and enjoy living together, here are some tips for getting along with your flatmates:

Invite your flatmates to do things with you

Sharing experiences like going to the movies, exploring the city, or eating together can help build lasting relationships. Find common interests and hobbies to spark conversations.

Create a rota

Establishing rules and a cleaning rota early on can prevent future disagreements. Assign tasks like taking out the trash, doing dishes, or cleaning communal areas regularly.

Put some music on in the kitchen

Playing music can signal you're around and serve as a great conversation starter. Consider creating a shared Spotify playlist for the flat.

Cook or bake together

Spend time in the kitchen when others are there to cook or bake together. This can be a fun ice-breaker and make everyone feel more comfortable.

Go food shopping together

This can save money and reduce waste by buying in bulk and sharing costs. Plan flat meals to cook and enjoy together.

Start conversations

Don’t wait to be approached. Engage your flatmates in conversations to get to know them better and build relationships.

Be respectful

Consider your flatmates' schedules and preferences. For example, avoid loud music or gatherings if someone has an important exam or meeting the next day.

Living in halls can be a rewarding and enjoyable experience if you make an effort to get along with your flatmates. By following these tips, you can create a comfortable and harmonious living environment and possibly make lifelong friends.
