Moving from Nigeria to the University of Southampton has been an incredible journey filled with new experiences, challenges, and opportunities. As an international student, I’ve found Southampton to be a welcoming and vibrant city that offers a perfect blend of academic rigour and social activities.

Exploring Southampton

One of my favourite pastimes is exploring the city. Southampton is rich in history and culture, and there’s always something new to discover. I often start my weekends with a stroll through the city centre, where I can admire the medieval walls and visit the Sea City Museum to learn more about the city’s maritime heritage.

Shopping Adventures

When it comes to shopping, West Quay is my go-to destination. This large shopping centre has everything I need, from clothing stores to electronics. It’s a one-stop shop for all my essentials and a great place to hang out with friends. Another spot I frequent is The Marland’s, a smaller shopping centre that offers a more relaxed shopping experience with unique stores and boutiques. Furthermore, I like ASDA for my groceries because it's close by and accessible by foot from Mayflower.

Culinary Delights

Food is an essential part of my life, and Southampton does not disappoint. I have a few favourite spots that I visit regularly. Kokoro is fantastic for a quick and delicious meal, offering a variety of Asian dishes that remind me of home. For a more laid-back dining experience, I head to Burga, where I can enjoy a juicy burger with friends. Cha-Sha is another favourite, known for its flavourful and authentic dishes.

Academic Life

The University of Southampton has been a great place for my academic growth. The facilities are top-notch, and the professors are always willing to help. I’ve made friends from all over the world, and the diverse student community has enriched my learning experience. The university also offers various clubs and societies, and I’ve joined the Nigerian Society, which has been a great way to stay connected to my roots and meet fellow Nigerians.

Additionally, Mayflower Halls helped a lot smoothing out my student experience journey. The study areas in my halls helped massively during exam season, and having a bus stop right outside always helped me make my 9 am lectures.

Social Life and Activities

Southampton offers a vibrant social scene. I enjoy attending events organised by the university and exploring the local nightlife. I also love spending time at the parks, especially during the summer. Southampton Common is a beautiful green space where I can relax, have a picnic, or go for a jog.

The halls have a very student-friendly environment, and I made a diverse set of friends while hanging out and studying in the common area.

Final Thoughts

Living in Southampton has been an enriching experience. The city offers a perfect balance of academic and social life, making it an ideal place for international students. I’ve grown both personally and academically, and I look forward to making more memories here.

If you’re considering studying abroad, I highly recommend the University of Southampton. It’s a place where you can thrive, make lifelong friends, and enjoy a diverse and vibrant city.
