Southampton is home to a wealth of beautiful green spaces. Whether you’re looking to unwind after a long day of lectures or seeking a picturesque spot for a weekend picnic, here are some of the best parks and gardens near the University of Southampton.
Southampton Common
Right by Avenue campus and covering over 365 acres, Southampton Common is a vast public park perfect for walking, jogging, or simply relaxing on the grass. It's also home to a variety of wildlife, including ducks, swans, and other birds, particularly around the Ornamental Lake - Perfect for a picnic on a sunny afternoon!
Valley Gardens
One of the hidden gems on Highfield Campus is the beautiful and serene Valley Gardens. This green space provides a peaceful retreat right in the heart of campus, perfect for unwinding between classes or engaging in outdoor study sessions.
Mayflower Park
Located alongside the River Test, this park offers stunning views of the waterfront and the bustling port of Southampton. This park frequently hosts events by the water and is a nice little escape from the city. It's right by Red Funnel Ferries which will get you to the Isle of Wight in only 60 minutes.
Hoglands Park
Situated in the city centre, Hoglands Park is easily accessible and a popular spot for those who find themselves in need of a quick escape from the city. The park includes basketball courts, football pitches, and a skate park and holds festivals brimming with community spirit! There are other parks right by this one including Houndwell, Palmerston, East and Watts park so it's worth checking them all out to find your favourite.
Riverside Park
Just around the corner from Wessex Lane Halls, Riverside Park provides a large open green space right on the river. Paddle boards and kayaks are available to rent at the Woodmill activity centre. Whether you are looking for a walk, jog, game of football or something more adventurous, head down to Riverside Park.
