SIM cards aren't usually the first thing on your mind when you're packing for university, but they're very important and can save you a lot of money!
Using a home-country plan abroad can cause high roaming fees, whilst local SIMs provide affordable data and a reliable connection for campus Wi-Fi.
Types of SIM cards
Believe it or not, there are different types of SIM cards. But don't worry, it's actually quite SIMple to understand! UK SIM cards can be purchased online, either from the nearest mobile phone shops, or prepaid SIM cards can be found in most supermarkets. Let's see which SIM best suits you...
This is the most flexible option that allows you to literally 'pay as you go'. You can top up the data, texts, and minutes as and when you need them - or even change your plan without needing to cancel a contract if you want a different data package.
It's ideal if you're not planning to use your phone too much, however, if this isn't the case, having to top up your data allowance and keeping track of when it runs out can become a bit of a hassle.
This is the standard option for using your phone in the UK/abroad. It's very convenient if you have a dual-SIM phone, in which case you can swap between your UK and home SIM card if you're travelling back home for summer/winter and want to avoid roaming fees.
Many network providers will also offer you a free SIM card, and you can choose which plan works best for you. Most plans will usually be paid monthly, however, you can usually get better value for money if you commit to a 12-month plan. In a nutshell, the more you pay, the higher your data allowance will be.
An e-SIM is a digital SIM card built directly into your phone, so instead of inserting a tiny plastic chip, you can download a mobile plan as software by scanning a QR code or using an app. Many network providers offer student-friendly prepaid data or flexible monthly bundles.
One benefit of e-SIMs is that they cannot be lost, stolen or physically removed from a lost phone, meaning you have more security.

Subscriptions are not included in the plan, so you'll benefit more if you already have those existing subscriptions to the streaming services.

How do I actually buy a UK SIM Card?
Always buy before you fly! Buying a SIM card online before you arrive in the UK means you can immediately connect to a mobile network and focus on arriving at campus. Many companies allow you to purchase online and have a physical SIM card sent to you, or you can purchase an e-SIM.
You can only activate your SIM card once you've arrived in the UK, as you will need to be connected to a network. Your chosen provider might have different instructions and options to activate online.
