Welcome to the University of Southampton! Starting university is an exciting time, filled with new experiences, opportunities, and friendships. Your first fortnight can set the tone for the rest of the year, but don't put too much pressure on it - enjoy yourself! Here’s a guide on how to balance fun and self-care during your initial days on campus.
Explore campus and local area
Familiarise yourself with your campus:
- Take a campus tour to get acquainted with your new environment.
- Locate key buildings such as lecture halls, libraries, student services, and the student union.
- Explore nearby amenities like supermarkets, cafes, pubs/bars and parks.
Discover Southampton:
- Visit the city centre and landmarks like the Bargate, Tudor House and Garden, and the SeaCity Museum.
- Walk along the waterfront and enjoy the view from Mayflower Park.
Join Freshers’ Week activities
Dive in and meet new people:
- Participate in the Freshers’ Fair to learn about different clubs and societies.
- Attend welcome events, social gatherings, and themed parties organised by us and the Student Union.
- Make sure to join a few societies, whether it’s sports, arts, or other interests - it's a great way to make new friends and settle in.
Make your room feel like home
Personalise your space:
- Decorate your room with photos, posters, and personal items to make it more YOU.
- Meet your flatmates and organise some sort of activity (e.g. flat dinner, movie night, games night, etc) to get to know who you're living with.
- Set up a comfortable study space to help you be productive in your room.
Self-care and wellness
Prioritise your wellbeing:
- Explore the university’s wellness resources, we have dedicated teams on hand if you need any support when you arrive.
- Attend a yoga or mindfulness class to help manage stress.
- Make sure to prioritise your happiness!
Get active
Stay fit and healthy:
- Join our gym or sign up for a sports club.
- Find a good jogging route or walking spots so you know where to go when you need some fresh air.
- Participate in outdoor activities like cycling or hiking in nearby areas.
Plan ahead for your course
Get organised:
- Make sure to put any key course dates in your calendar (deadlines, breaks, trips, etc).
- Set up a study timetable to balance your academic workload with social activities. Remember, both are important!
- Attend any introductory lectures or seminars to get a head start on your course.
