Top 10 Halloween movies to watch with your flatmates

Whether you like a chill horror puzzle, paranormal activity or the full gory experience, there's a Halloween movie for everyone! Here's our top 10 list of Halloween movies for you and your flatmates to watch together.

Scary Movie (2000)

1. Scream (1996) 👻

Scream is the ultimate crowd-pleaser at Halloween. It's clever, fast-paced, and has so many iconic quotes you and your flatmates will reference throughout October! It's perfect for group watching, and you'll all be shouting at the screen, guessing who the killer is.

2. Shaun of the Dead (2004) 🧟‍♂️

A hilarious, gory British classic. This comedy-horror masterpiece follows two roommates as they deal with a sudden zombie apocalypse. The relatable roommate dynamic, iconic pub scenes and quotable lines make this a brilliant watch for your flat living room.

3. The Cabin in the Woods (2011) 🎛️

The vibe of this move is mind-bending and wildly entertaining! Five college friends go to a remote cabin and get exactly what they didn't bargain for. It completely deconstructs horror tropes in a way that will keep a group of students hooked and talking through the entire second half.

4. Jennifer's Body (2009) ❤️‍🔥

A cult classic, campy and darkly funny. A demon-possessed high school cheerleader starts eating her male classmates. It's become a massive student favourite thanks to its sharp, witty dialogue, incredible 2000s soundtrack, and unapologetic camp.

5. The Conjuring (2013) 👏

A pure, atmospheric supernatural terror! Based on the allegedly real-life case files of paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, this is the gold standard for modern haunted house films. It relies on relentless tension, brilliant sound design, and iconic jump scares (the clapping game will haunt your hallways) that are best experienced while you cling to your roommates for dear life.

6. Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) 💀

Is it a Christmas or Halloween Film? We'll leave that for you to decide! For a more chilled, beautifully dark movie, Tim Burton's stop-motion masterpiece is the ultimate cosy compromise. If half your flatmates hate horror but still want the Halloween vibes, Jack Skellington's identity crisis is the perfect solution, and it features an incredible soundtrack that everyone can sing along to.

7. Psycho (1960) 🚿

The ultimate psychological classic. If your flatmates appreciate cinema history, you have to watch the film that practically invented the modern slasher. Alfred Hitchcock's black-and-white masterpiece, which follows Marion Crane into the eerie Bates Motel, still holds up perfectly. The iconic shower scene, Bernard Herrmann's screeching violin, and the legendary plot twist will hook the entire room.

8. The Bad Seed (1956) 👧🏼

The Bad Seed is a wonderfully twisted, vintage thriller. Long before Orphan or The Omen, there was 8-year-old Rhoda Penmark - a blonde, pigtail-wearing schoolgirl who seems perfect until a boy who beats her in a competition mysteriously drowns. Her performance earned an Oscar nomination, and it was absolute gold. The film will love debating the nature vs nurture argument while enjoying the film's famously theatrical, dramatic 1950s acting. It's also the first horror film known to have a female killer!

9. Halloween (1978) 🎃

John Carpenter's indie movie introduced the world to Michael Myers and the ultimate final girl, Laurie Strode. The minimalist, bone-chilling piano piece creates an incredibly chilling, tense atmosphere in a dark living room. It's an essential viewing for 31 October.

10. Friday the 13th (1980) 🏕️

The gritty, retro summer camp slaughter! Camp Crystal Lake, young counsellors, and terrible decisions - it's incredible to watch as a group because it leans into classic 80s horror tropes. Watch closely to see a very young Kevin Bacon meet a famously brutal end, and enjoy the iconic plot twist at the end that everyone forgets if they've only seen the pop-culture parodies!
