Let’s shine a spotlight on some incredible women who studied at the University of Southampton and have gone on to make a real difference in the world. Whether in healthcare, education, or scientific research, these alumni are proof that determination and passion can lead to incredible things.
Ever thought about how one person can change lives around the world? Dr. Kizanne James-McCarthy is doing just that. She’s dedicated her career to improving healthcare access and was even recognised with a Rising Star Award at Southampton’s Outstanding Alumni Awards. Her work focuses on making sure healthcare reaches the people who need it most – a true inspiration!
If you or someone you know struggles with allergies, Professor Judith Holloway has probably played a part in shaping how allergies are researched and treated. She’s been leading the MSc Allergy course at Southampton, training the next generation of specialists. Plus, she’s been recognised for her outstanding teaching – proving that education can change lives!
Professor Diana Eccles is a name to know in the world of breast cancer research. She led the biggest-ever study on survival rates for women with the BRCA gene mutation, helping doctors and patients make better-informed decisions. Her work is making a real difference to people’s lives and giving hope to those facing hereditary cancers.
Dr. Helen Rees proves that passion for a subject can take you anywhere – in her case, all the way to Canada, where she’s now President of the Canadian Federation of Podiatric Medicine. She’s raising the standards of foot care and healthcare more broadly, showing that Southampton grads can truly go global!
These amazing women started out as students, just like you, juggling lectures, assignments, and late-night study sessions. Today, they’re changing lives, pushing boundaries, and leading in their fields. Their stories prove that no matter where you start, hard work, ambition, and a little bit of bravery can take you far (and these were just a few we've highlighted here, there are plenty more inspirational alumni out there!).
