It's completely normal and something we may all feel during our time at university, but rather than let it get out of hand, there are steps you can take to either get yourself through it or stop it from happening in the first place.
Stay connected with home
Keep in touch with family and friends regularly. Schedule video calls, send messages, or even write letters. Staying connected can help you feel close to loved ones even when you're far away.
Get involved on campus
Join clubs, societies, or sports teams to meet new people and make friends. Getting involved in campus activities can keep you busy, help you build a support network, and reduce feelings of isolation.
Create a routine/set goals
Establishing a daily routine can provide a sense of stability. Plan your days with a mix of classes, study time, social activities, and personal time. A routine can help you feel more settled and focused.
If you want to go the extra mile, you can set small, achievable goals to give yourself something to work towards and look forward to. Whether it’s academic achievements, joining a new club, or exploring a new place, goals can provide motivation and purpose.
Personalise your space
Make your uni room feel like home by adding personal touches. Decorate with photos, posters, and items that remind you of home. A cosy, familiar environment can provide comfort and reduce homesickness.
Explore your new surroundings
Get to know your new home and campus. Explore local attractions, parks, cafes, and shops. Find your new favourite place to be and spend lots of time there!
Talk about your feelings
Don’t bottle up your feelings. Talk to friends, flatmates, or our support services about how you're feeling. Sharing your experiences will help you feel less alone - we're all in this together!
Stay active
Exercise is a great way to boost your mood and reduce stress. Join the university gym, take part in sports, or go for regular walks or runs. Staying active can help you feel more positive and even better if it's outdoors in the fresh air.
Put your wellbeing first
Ensure you’re eating well, getting enough sleep, and taking time to relax and unwind. Self-care is crucial for your mental and emotional well-being so don't skimp on face masks.
Remember, we are on hand to support you!
If you’re struggling with homesickness you can get in touch with the Student Wellbeing Support team, who will be on hand to help you.
